Chef's Tour Day 2: The Salt Shaker Deli
On our travels, the department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Aquaculture kept us well fed. On the first day we ate at The Port Gastropub, in Port Williams. It’s a shared owner’s restaurant. There are a number of local business men and women and professionals who all own a share in the restaurant. It’s a great concept that seems to be working. The food was good. What you would expect from a Gastropub so we were all pleased with our lunch.
On the second day of the tour, we were heading toward the south shore when our bellies started to rumble. The Salt Shaker Deli, in Lunenburg, opened its doors just for us to treat us to a great selection from there eclectic and diverse menu that featured their favorite local products. The Salt Shaker is co-owned by Sylvie MacDonald and Chef Martin Ruiz Salvador, owners of Fleur de Sel also in Lunenburg, Carolyn Ramsey. Carolyn was a great host and kept us smiling by bringing us flights of food. First we started with 2 different mussel dishes, roasted garlic & cream and Portuguese style with Sausage. Both served with house made bread. The mussels were very tasty and super fresh. In fact, they probably brought them in that morning from, where our next stop after lunch was, Indian Point Marine Farms.
After the mussels, we were served the smoked seafood chowder, which was rich and had a great light smokey flavor. It was full of fresh haddock, lobster, and mussels. Carolyn said that she loved the fact that she can watch the boat come in to port, carrying what she will be serving her guests that day or the next. You can’t get much closer to your food. I could see the look of envy in all of the Chefs eyes.
Next came pairs of their three sharing platters. The local smoked salmon was great served with capers and lemon cream cheese. The Italian platter had a selection of locally produced meat, roasted veggies, and olives. And the Mediterranean platter topped us off with Greek salad, hummus, tzatiki, artichokes and olives.
The meal was great and the space was just as satisfying. It was cozy and inviting and we had a great view of the water on a beautiful afternoon. If you are ever in Lunenburg, I would suggest the deli for lunch and Fleur de Sel for dinner. Chef Salvador offers a great 7 course taster for 2, with different courses for both dinners. My parents have had the experience twice and both times were over impressed and were even given a hand written menu so they could bring home to show me. I recently met Chef Salvador by chance a few weeks ago. I got a chance to have a beer and talk shop with him and TJ, a friend of mine from the former Bear Restaurant. He has a great passion for high quality cuisine and fresh local products… Next time I’m in Lunenburg, I’m making a reservation!
